Manchester Reads | May 2024
This May discover the universe together with a space-themed Manchester Reads. Check out books, programs for all ages, crafts and even a telescope! Manchester Reads will culminate with a visit from Kelly Weinersmith on May 28 at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Library. Weinersmith is co-author of our keynote book, “A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space and Have We Really Thought this Through?”, a NY Times bestseller and Scientific American’s #1 book for 2023. Pajama Storytime

Get cozy at the library! Come dressed in your pjs for a storytime and craft with Miss Audrey. This program is for ages 4-7.
Plant a Seed – Paint a Pot
Saturday, April 27 at 11:00 AM—1:00 PM
During the plant swap kids and kids of all ages can paint a pot and plant a seed of their choice. Bring home your creation and watch it grow!
Winter and Spring Storytime
Wednesdays 10:30—11:15AM
Join Miss Audrey for storytime for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers! We’ll share books, songs, and games. Join us every Wednesday starting January 24th at 10:30 am. This program runs through to April 24th.

Graphic Novel Club

Join the graphic novel club! We meet once a month from January to June. Explore new and new-to-you graphic novels with friends, snacks and activities! Next meeting is April 24th at 4 pm. We will be discussing “Squire and Knight” by Scott Chantler. Ask at the front desk for your copy now! This program is for grades 4-7, and registration is required.

Library Renovation/Expansion Plans: Ask the Director

The MBTS Library is in the process of applying for grant funding to renovate and expand the library. The Library Director will hold open table hours each Tuesday at 11am in the library. Drop in to ask questions and learn more about this project!
Mindfulness Meditation
Weekly at the First Parish Conference Room
Tuesdays, 11:00AM-12:00PM
Alida Bryant is a Dharma Leader and meditation instructor under the guidance of Anam Thubten Rinpoche. She has been meditating for over 30 years (still very much a beginner!) and studying and practicing with lineage holders in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Beginners and experienced meditators are welcome. There will be guided meditation, some silence, and discussion.
Please register if this is your first time coming to this mindfulness meditation program. We need either an email or a phone number in case we need to cancel or change venues at the last minute. Your contact info will be shared with the program facilitator who will only contact you about info pertaining to this library program.
Art Across Asia: Persia – Crossroads for Art and Culture (Virtual)

“Cooking with Scraps” Baking Demonstration and Discussion (Virtual)

Do you feel bad about throwing away (or even composting) food scraps that could be used? Well, feel guilty no more! Lindsay-Jean Hard, cookbook author and sustainability warrior, and Amy Emberling, Managing Partner of Zingerman’s Bakehouse, are here to help us learn how we can make use of those scraps, keep them out of landfills, and still have enough left-over for our compost pile!
Amy and Lindsay-Jean will kick us off with a virtual baking demonstration of the classic banana bread made at Zingerman’s Bakehouse (it includes the whole fruit—yup, peels too!), a recipe featured in their latest cookbook, Celebrate Every Day. Register online or over the phone at 978-526-7711.
MBTS Cultural Council Presents: Author Chuck Wisner

The Manchester-by-the-Sea Cultural Council in partnership with the MBTS Public Library are excited to host a distinguished speakers lecture series this winter and spring. For our 4th session we will be hosting Chuck Wisner a leadership coach and consultant. He will be discussing his book “The Art of Conscious Conversations: Transforming How We Talk, Listen, and Interact.”
Registrations are required for this event as space is limited. Due to the registration volume we will be hosting this event at the Crowell Chapel. Please register even if the event is full and call us to cancel your registration if you cannot attend. Haunted Happenings: Fear Town and Factory of Terror with Owner Mike Quill (Virtual)

Fear Town Haunted House in Seekonk, MA is an outdoor haunted trail through the woods. Factory of Terror in Fall River, MA is a well loved and known local attraction. Join owner Mike Quill and Jeff DePaoli, host of “That Halloween Podcast”, as they talk all about these fantastic haunted experiences right in our backyard.

Free Friday Movie

We will be showing a movie in the Reference Room on the 4th Friday of every month at 6:00PM. We will supply the popcorn. Feel free to bring covered, non-alcoholic beverages.
The movie this month has a MPAA Rating: PG-13; for mature thematic content, sexual content, violence and language. Check out what is showing on our website.
Plant Swap
Saturday, April 27 at 11:00 AM—1:00PM
Have some spider plants that are ready to propagate? Buy an eight pack of flowers and only needed six? Did you like me start 6 tomato plants hoping only one would make it and now you have five extra? Why not swap the plants with your neighbors? Trade some spider plants for some aloe. Some zucchini for some tomatoes.
Notice: These plants are from home gardens and may carry pests and disease that may not be healthy for your garden. Trade with caution and when you can, remove the soil from new plants and plant them as bare roots to limit the spread.
