May’s Director’s Report
To the wonderful community of Manchester-by-the-Sea,
First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you who came out and supported our capital request at the Annual Town Meeting; thanks to you, we are now on the road to adding a much-needed, improved restroom to our beloved library. Your patience as we worked through the options to find the one that best suits our building is much appreciated. As the process continues, we will keep you updated on our progress so you know what to expect.
In other library news, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we’re taking the opportunity to highlight some of the resources the library has to assist you with taking care of yourself and your loved ones. Since 2023, the library has offered Mindfulness Meditation classes, led by Dharma leader and meditation instructor Alida Bryant. Learning to meditate can be a powerful way to quiet your mind and learn more about yourself. Meditation practice is linked to better health outcomes, mental and physical!

The library provides an online program designed especially for young adults; Teen Health & Wellness is an award-winning resource that provides teens up-to-date, nonjudgmental, curricular, and self-help support. It also features a Calm Room with videos, sounds, and resources to help teens relax and refocus.
Through varied types of programming, we build community and provide opportunities to connect at the library. Whether we’re sharing the joy of reading, discussing ideas, learning a new skill, or moving or creating together, our programs help to reduce isolation & loneliness and strengthen resilience.
We hope this May you’ll explore the library and find your own reasons for joy and connection!
Stay well!
Cynthia Gemmell, Library Director
