September’s Note from the Director

Banned Books Week takes place September 22 – 28.

Autumn is my favorite time of year, and like many New Englanders, I am looking forward to the turning of the leaves and the cooler, crisp days of September. We know it’s a busy time for families as kids return to school and it’s also a busy month for libraries.

Banned Books Week is an important time for libraries in September. According to the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom, 1,247 demands to censor library books and materials were made in 2023, and those numbers are increasing rapidly. So one week each year, libraries shine a light on this activity, and we encourage people to read challenged and banned books. The theme for Banned Books Week 2024 (September 22-28) is “Freed Between the Lines.” We encourage you to visit the library this week to check out our display, and to celebrate your own freedom to read!

I have been participating in the Massachusetts Center for Book Adult Reading Challenge this year, and it has really encouraged me to stretch my reading muscles. It’s a great way to discover new books and authors, and even if you haven’t been participating all year, I would encourage you to give it a try! September’s challenge is to read a debut novel by a Massachusetts author. If you’re unsure of how to find one of these titles, stop by the library where we have a list of choices.

September is also Library Card Sign Up month. We invite anyone who hasn’t yet signed up for a library card to do so this month, so if you have a new neighbor, or a friend who doesn’t use the library, spread the word. We’ll be giving away book bags and lanyards to new members this month, and we encourage everyone to explore the library anew to discover services you may not be aware of yet!

Happy Reading!
