Manchester local Susan Halpern will begin hosting a weekly series of one-hour Tai Chi class for ages 18 and older Please wear loose clothing, sneakers or any other low heeled, non-slip shoes, and practice in a space about 6 – 8 square feet. Also, please keep a chair for resting as needed nearby.
Tai Chi is an ancient form of exercise, some forms created 300 years ago. The class will focus on the Sun style which employs a more upright stance with small arm movements and short steps. Forms demand attention and stimulate good balance, attention, and stress reduction. Anyone can benefit from Tai Chi. Studies have found that regular Tai Chi practice reduces the incidence of falls.
While group practice is how many have been exposed to Tai Chi, a home practice provides many benefits and will prepare everyone for meetings outside when this pandemic is in control.

Outdoor Luminaria Event– December 12, 2020
Outdoor Luminaria Event
The Luminaria event has now been updated to Friday, December 11th at 1 PM to Saturday, December 12th to 11 AM. take a stroll by the Manchester Library and Town Hall to see the walkways decorated with 375 electronic tea light luminarias to celebrate the start of the holiday season and to honor the Manchester-by-the-Sea’s 375th anniversary!
The tradition of luminarias comes from Mexico. It has been celebrated for many years in New Mexico before spreading to communities throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. The Pueblo Indians in New Mexico have long lit small fires outside their homes to light their way to church on Christmas Eve.
In Spanish, the word farolito translates as "little lantern", while luminaria means "festival light". Historically luminaria referred not to a paper lantern but to a small festival or vigil bonfire; however, this distinction is not commonly made outside of northern New Mexico. [Source: Wikipedia-Luminaria]
This event is kindly sponsored by the 375th Celebration Committee, the Friends of the Manchester Library, and the Manchester-Essex Rotary Club. If you have any questions please contact Rachael Meneades at rmeneades@manchesterpl.org!
