The Importance of Remembrance – Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project

The Importance of Remembrance
Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project

Dear reader,
As you can see in the news, the War on Terror has been winding down for some time. The bulk of United States troops in Iraq as well as Afghanistan have been pulled out. In the coming years, the individual stories of veterans will be a subject that will not gain much media coverage. With the lack of coverage and attention, veterans’ stories will not be seen as either too relevant or too important.

Personally, I could not stand to see this happen. Many people now simply don’t think much of our military, as we are fighting on soil in some other country on the other side of the globe. But as George Santayana once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. The War on Terror is a conflict as important as any other fought by our troops, and remembering its history is crucial.

I have been thoroughly impacted by these thoughts, and I have been wanting to take action for some time, which is why for my Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, I intend to interview as many veterans as possible from this era and make their interviews easily accessible to the public so that people do not forget the sacrifices our troops have made in the recent years.

In every Eagle Scout Leadership Service project, there is a requirement that calls for the future Eagle Scout to somehow educate the local community. To take things one step further, I will be giving to several local middle schools to educate the youth of our nation about our veterans and their sacrifices, as well documenting the information gathered here, in the Manchester Public Library.

I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read this, and below my signature are the list of all of the veterans I have surveyed and/or interviewed. Below each of the veterans’ respective names is a link that will take you to a PDF of their survey, and below is a link to the YouTube channel I have created for this project, which contains all of the audio and video interviews I have managed to record on this project. Thank you, for remembering our veterans.

Respectfully,

Life Scout Jack Carlson, B.S.A.
Junior Assistant Scoutmaster
