This year’s Manchester Community Reads will focus on a variety of programs for adults, teens and kids to celebrate all things Boston Marathon!

To kick off this year’s events the library is excited to announce that artist, writer and marathon runner Bobbi Gibb will be visiting the library for two book talks and signings on Saturday, March 3rd from 1 PM – 4 PM.

Bobbi Gibb is a three-time winner of the Boston Marathon Women’s Division in the pre-sanctioned era, 1966, 1967 and 1968. She was the first woman ever to run and complete the Boston Marathon in 1966 at a time when it was believed that women were not physically able to run marathon distances.

Her first book talk will be from 1 PM – 2 PM at the Manchester library where she will read from the illustrated children’s book “The Girl Who Ran: Bobbi Gibb, the First Woman to run the Boston Marathon”, written by Frances Poletti and Kristina Yee and illustrated by Susanna Chapman, which tells the story of Bobbi’s relentless desire to run the Boston Marathon after visiting the race with her father as a child. This book is suggested for ages five and up.

Following her visit, Bobbi will resume her book talk at the Manchester Historical Museum from 2:30 PM – 4 PM to discuss her memoir “Wind In The Fire” and her journey to finally achieve her dream of running the Boston Marathon by overcoming numerous obstacles and prejudices with tenacity, perseverance and love. Copies of both books are available at the library at the circulation desk.
