    PHOTO CONTEST

    Make Your Dog a Star Photo Contest

    Show us your dog’s funny side. All shutterbugs and all ages are welcome to enter.

    Pickup the Rules and Entry Form at the library or on the website. Submission deadline is Friday, March 10th.

    From March 11th through March 26th, the community is invited to view the photographs and vote for Best in Show.

    RASPBERRY Pi ROBOT BUILDING

    Come learn about basic circuits and robots built using the Raspberry Pi computer board. After programming your robot to move as a drone, we'll challenge you to use an on-board camera to catch glimpses of "Poke-aliens" at landmarks on a "Mission to Mars".

    Hosted by the Rhode Island Computer Museum and supported by The Hooper Fund.

    Teen Advisory Board Meeting

    Join the Manchester Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board and have a say in what happens at YOUR library, have some fun and earn Community Service hours! The Teen Advisory Board offers suggestions and help in making the Manchester Public Library a fun and exciting place for teens.

    This year we’ll be designing an “Escape Room” program, developing “What You Going to Read?” book lists, taking our annual shopping trip to Barnes and Noble, and putting together lots of summer reading crafts and games.

    We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 PM. Applications are available at the library. If you have questions, please email YA Librarian, Anne Cowman at: acowman@ manchesterpl.org.

    On Thursday, March 16th at 6:30 PM come by the Library and join in on a book discussion on this year’s Manchester Reads books Rescue Road and A Dog’s Purpose.

    Movie Night: Jackie

    On Friday, March 17th at 5:30 PM come by the library to see a film that explores the life of John F. Kennedy’s famous widow from her days in the White House to after the president’s assassination in 1963. Natalie Portman portrays the First Lady as she fights through severe grief and trauma following her husband’s death and how she will begin to forge a new path in life to regain her faith, raise her children, and define her husband's historic legacy. This movie stars Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard and Billy Crudup. Call the Library at 978-526-7711 to make a reservation. Bring your own drink, the Library will provide popcorn. This movie is rated R and anyone under 17 must have a parent or guardian fill out a permission slip available at the Library's circulation desk.

    The high school student volunteers of the Teen Advisory Board will be visiting Barnes and Noble to shop for new additions to the Young Adult collection.

    Dog Behavior, Communication, & Body Language Seminar with Alana Stevenson

    Are you interested in having a better relationship with your furry friend in your life? Come by the Library on Saturday, March 18th at 1 PM for a seminar on the principles of how dogs learn so you can know the best ways to teach them using a completely humane training approach. Alana Stevenson is a professional Animal Behavior Specialist and Dog Trainer. She is certified in Low Stress Handling for dogs and she is the author of two books on humane and positive dog training and behavior modification: The Right Way the First Time: Teaching Your Dog Kindly & Humanely and Training Your Dog the Humane Way: Simple Teaching Tips for Resolving Problem Behaviors and Raising a Happy Dog. She will cover a variety of topics such as the importance of timing in training, principles of association and context learning, and how your body language, eye-contact, and touch can directly influence a dog’s behavior. You will learn how to read dog body language so you can have a better relationship with your dog and interpret dog to dog interactions correctly.

    Monthly Sunday Book Sales

    The Friends of the Manchester Public library will be kicking off monthly book sales on Sunday, October 16th. Each Sunday the book sale carts will be filled, arranged, and staffed by a Friend of the Manchester Public Library. A great opportunity for some great books that support and supplement library programs and services. · The sales will be held: Nov 20, Dec 4, Jan 22, Feb 26, and March 19.

    Jamboree-by-the-Sea

    Sing, dance, jump, and read at this special storytime with Lisa Cheney of Early Childhood Partners/CFCE! For kids up to age 4. Across the street at the Manchester Historical Society,

    Operation Delta Dog

    Operation Delta Dog is a nonprofit organization founded in 2013 as a way to both help and tackle the epidemic of PTSD and/or TBI in veteran soldiers and the animal shelters overflowing with unwanted dogs. Sarah Stratton, a representative from Operation Delta Dog, will visit the library on Thursday, March 23rd at 6:30 PM to describe the process of their program such as: where they find the dogs, the application process for a veteran, how the veterans are matched with the dogs and the training process the organization uses. They will also talk about the service dogs and the rights afforded to them through the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, they will cover the correct etiquette when approaching service dogs. A short video and a Q&A will follow. No dogs will be at the program.     Movie Night: Passengers

    On Friday, March 24th at 5:30 PM take journey into a romantic science fiction film about finding love and excitement lightyears away! While a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet is transporting thousands of people in induced hibernation, a malfunction occurs in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers are awakened decades before their expected arrival. Faced with spending the rest of their lives alone on the spacecraft, an unexpected romance blossoms between the two. Their newfound life together is interrupted when they discover that a problem may threaten the entire spacecraft and everyone on it, and only they are capable of stopping it.     Meet and Greet With Cape Ann Animal Aid

    Want to bring some more love and joy into your life? Consider adopting a rescue dog! On Saturday, March 25th from 11AM to 1PM the Cape Ann Animal Aid will be at the library with some furry friends for you to meet! Stop by and enjoy the chance to talk with the volunteers of the animal shelter about what they do to help out the adorable dogs waiting for their ‘furever’ home. Additionally, the volunteers can help explain the adoption process with a list of hopeful animals available at the shelter looking for their new best friend!

    Backyard Gardeners: Seed Starting and Swap at the Library

    Join local gardening, non-profit Backyard Growers on Wednesday, March 29th, 6:30 PM in the Library for an evening of spring seed starting.

    Learn about starting seeds indoors, keeping your sprouts healthy, and what supplies you need to get started. Bring seeds to swap. We will also have some available for attendees.

    MANCHESTER READS AUTHOR TALK

    This year’s Manchester Reads book is Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway by the New York Times bestselling author and journalist Peter Zheutlin.

    Mr. Zheutlin will give us first-hand information about his adventures in writing this book when he visits the library for an author talk on Thursday, March 30th at 6:30 PM.
