February at the Library

Manchester Reads 2008

Every winter since 2004 the Library has offered a town-wide reading experience called "Manchester Reads," first sponsored by a Library Services and Technology grant. The purpose of a community reads program is to promote literacy, social interaction, and weave together different elements of our town through discussion of a common topic. This year Abraham Lincoln is our theme. Whether you prefer fiction or non-fiction, we invite you to explore another controversial war, one that touched the town of Manchester 150 years ago. The Trustees hope to have the mystery statue, America honoring her Dead, on display for this program.

Manchester Reads 2008
February-March 2008

Choose a classic book on Lincoln, fiction or non-fiction, or one of the many new books being released for the bicentennial. The Library will offer many books and audiobooks on the subject of Lincoln. Then sign up for a book discussion group in March. Contact Mike O'Connor, Assistant Director, 978-526-2017, to sign up.

Employee of the Month

Sara Collins, Children's Librarian

The Trustees would like to recognize the Library staff who provide the community with outstanding service. This month the spotlight is on Sara Collins, the second longest member of the Library family. Sara Collins will be celebrating her twentieth year as Children's Librarian in April 2008. During those years, Ms. Collins has worked full time in the ever changing and expanding field of Youth Services. The library has gone from one story time per week in 1988, to a busy department which offers programs for infants, materials for parents, Story times for Toddlers and Preschoolers, family concerts and craft times, science, music, and reading for many ages, has added a Young Adult side to the Reference Room, created a Teen Advisory Board, and begun serving Tweens and Teens in the process. Through the course of these years, Sara got married, became a Mom, went back to graduate school for her masters degree in Library and Information Science, was selected as Manchester Town Employee of the Year , wrote numerous private local grants, obtained three state and federal grants: an Early Childhood grant (for families with children ages infant through three), A mother Goose Asks Why grant (science through literature for ages 3-7), and a recent Serving Tweens and Teens (ages 11-17). She is amazed when children from her Story Times come back to volunteer, stop by when home from college, or write her. It is a delight to have been a part of so many wonderful lives for so long, and still be the youngest person on the staff!
